Debbie Walker - Psychotherapist - Potters Bar, Herts - 0854 2578644 I offer long and short term psychotherapy for relationship and mental health problems as well as intercultural issues. I also have significant experience with clients who have addiction problems (including eating disorders) rape, domestic violence and/or sexual abuse.

This depends on you, the nature of your problem and what you want from therapy. Everybody works and reacts at a different pace so the time taken to get to the root of the problem varies.

Sometimes clients seek therapy for a specific thing and this may only take a number of weeks to work through. Others may start with one problem and then expand their discussion to include others and because certain emotions and thoughts can be difficult it may take time to discuss them. Therefore it is impossible to say with certainty how long therapy may take for a given individual.

However what most therapists will do in order to quantify expectations is agree a fixed number of sessions with a client (say six) and the review progress at the end of these sessions. It is up to the client what they want to do at this stage; most therapists will allow the client to continue if they want to.

Some clients do take time off from therapy after completing their agreed sessions to consolidate their feelings and gather themselves before continuing with their therapy. This gives them time to adjust and also helps them to feel in more control of the changes to their feelings.

I am happy to work on a short or long-term basis and I will usually agree a number of sessions before we start the process. This not only gives you an expectation it also helps to focus the sessions so that you get the most benefit from them.
